Getting your jobs indexed on Google for Jobs

Given the warm reception that Google for Jobs has received so far in the US, a UK launch is set to be imminent. However, there are several steps employers and recruitment businesses need to take to make sure their jobs are indexed by Google for Jobs.

Despite these requirements, a survey by digital marketing agency I-COM found that only 47 of the country’s 100 largest recruitment firms had implemented the required formatting that Google uses to interpret web page information for its user personalised services.

Here we take a look at Google’s key technical requirements for its Jobs platform and the changes businesses can implement today to have a better chance of appearing and ranking highly in the results tomorrow.

Inclusion of structured data

In Google’s words, structured data is a “standardised format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content”. In the case of jobs, this is including information like salary, whether it’s full or part time, location, etc. The inclusion of this data means posts are eligible to be displayed in the dedicated Job Search UI and feature the employer’s logo, reviews, rating and job details.

Step-by-step guide

Google recommends employers implement the following steps to make sure job postings appear on a Google for Jobs search.

  1. Make sure Google Bots can crawl over your job posting page and that it’s not protected by a robots.txt file or robots meta tag
  2. Ensure your host load settings allow for frequent crawls
  3. Add job listing structured data to your web page
  4. Test and preview your structured data
  5. Keep Google informed by submitting regular sitemaps. If your sitemap is not updated at least daily, your job postings may not appear in the feature
  6. If you want to remove a job posting that’s no longer available, remove it from your sitemap, remove the page entirely and add a noindex meta tag to the page
