Google Hire: How it works and what it means for you

Recruitment industry insiders have speculated for a long time whether Google, with its seemingly never-ending resources, would throw its hat into the growing jobs market. Then, in March 2017, eagle-eyed searchers noticed that the search engine giant had created the domain, which directed users to the Google Hire service.

Here, we answer some of the key questions around Google Hire and what its introduction is likely to mean for employers and recruitment businesses.

First of all, what is it?

Put simply, Hire is Google’s own applicant tracking system (ATS). The tech giant’s first foray into the recruitment industry offers a suite of services that have been designed to improve the recruitment process from start to finish. The intelligent system allows employers and recruiters to fully customise the hiring process with the ability to build a recruitment strategy that’s specific to a particular role. Additionally, Hire harnesses the power of Google search, allowing users to benefit from an optimised search results function.

One of the big selling points is that Hire is synced with Google Suite, using Gmail and Calendars, to ensure everything is kept in one place. This not only saves time for recruiters, it potentially means they can completely eliminate the need for the traditional Microsoft Office suite.

Who’s it for?

Despite the fact that other Google tools are open to all, there are certain stipulations when it comes to using Google Hire. The system was designed for businesses employing 1,000 people or fewer and they must utilise Google’s G-suite in order to take advantage of Hire’s key features.

Furthermore, although Hire has launched in the US, we’re still waiting for a launch date to be announced for the UK. However, given its early success in the US, it’s not likely we’ll be waiting for much longer.

What can UK businesses do to prepare for Google Hire?

Given Hire is yet to launch in the UK, businesses that fit the criteria have time to start looking at how they can incorporate it into their business and start capitalising from day one.

Now’s the ideal time to look at existing candidate attraction tools and whether current job board platforms or ATS can integrate with Google Hire. Also, given Hire’s reliance on G-suite integration, businesses need to develop confidence when it comes to using Google’s answer to Microsoft Office.

What impact will it have?

Despite the excitement surrounding Google Hire and its possibilities for small to medium-sized employers, it’s important to look at its wider impact on the industry. Some industry insiders have questioned whether it’s actually needed, given there are plenty of ATS and CRM systems in the market that carry out the same function and are already tried and tested.

Questions have also been raised about privacy, given that one of Google Hire’s key selling points sees it using candidate information that’s extracted from various external sources, including websites like LinkedIn. Given the impending General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which affects how businesses source and store user information, this concern is understandable.

However, Google Hire, with its easy-to-use platform looks set to make real waves upon its UK release. With larger organisations currently gaining more “Domain Authority” and therefore ranking higher on Google, Hire with its promise to optimise those businesses using the platform looks set to flip things in the favour of smaller organisations, levelling the playing field more than ever.
